Young Widows and Widowers, Ltd.

is operated by and for its members with the assistance of qualified facilitators. It is not affiliated with any other organization. Widows and widowers in the group range in age from 20 to 58, about 20 years younger than the traditional widowed population. Many are parents of very young or school-age children and all subscribe to our philosophy of turning grief into growth. Younger widowed persons have needs not addressed by other groups, a fact that led to the formation of YWW in 1983.

Y.W.W. Programs:

Weekly meetings are open to all young widowed persons. Emphasis is on support for the newly bereaved from peers guided by qualified facilitators. These meetings become the dynamic products of the members in attendance, governed by what their needs are at the time. Participants talk, listen, cry and laugh. They are free to discuss either common issues or personal problems, or they may simply remain silent.

About our members:

We are all different, yet we are all somehow the same. We live in different communities and have diverse careers and interests. Many of us are parents, some are not. We may have been married for several years or for only a few. Some of us became suddenly widowed; others, after a long illness. Some are very recently widowed and are feeling the intense pain of loss; others have been widowed longer and are contending with other issues. Each of us has a unique story to tell and our losses are deeply personal, but we all share the common experience of an early widowhood that destroyed our hopes and dreams. We also share the enriching experience of growing through our grief and helping others in the process.

If you are widowed:

We understand your hurt and have experienced your anger, pain, indecision, depression and isolation. We have been there ourselves and we can help. We’ve watched our own grief turn to growth through our association with YWW, and want to share this experience with you. We know it’s hard to believe that your hurt will heal when it’s so new and overwhelming, but it surely will. Members find that joining YWW was the best thing they did for themselves after being widowed. You will receive encouragement that will give us the opportunity to welcome you as a member. It can make a difference for you as it has done for so many others.
